I want this poster.

(Photo taken by James Olsen, at the JLA Enchantment Under the Sea Dance)

It's not just a bunch of cute women lined up in glamourous clothing. The dresses and poses suit the personalities of the characters very well. These women are all dolled up for a formal event, but they still look like superheroes. Wonder Woman and Power Girl are clearly physical powerhouses. Selina seems like a pensive crime queen. Zatanna looks like she just made the Empire State Building disappear. Ivy seems to be rising out of the ground and deciding whether the viewer should live or die.

(Found at Loren's, and I want a version with the men in nice suits too. Superman in a tux, drawn by Adam Hughes. Who wouldn't want that?)

  2. Oh, AND Kyle Rayner!

The thing I also like about this piece is that not all the women's body types look the same. I still would have loved to have seen an even more fuller figured woman in this, but Adam Hughes could have easily given the women the same waist sizes, breast sizes, and arm tone -- but, he didn't.

PS - Thanks for the welcome back!

  5. Wow may be an understatement. And the nice thing is that everyone is easy to recognize. Although I do have one I'm not sure about. Is the person on the chair Lois?

  6. Gosh, this is pretty. Different faces, differnt shades of blonde hair, different body types, different heights and expressions.

And yes, a male version in formal wear would be lovely.

  7. @Toriach: The woman in the chair is Batwoman, I believe.

  8. I think this picture is gorgeous <3 He can really make women with similar haircolors look completely different but equally beautiful.

"I want a version with the men in nice suits too. Superman in a tux, drawn by Adam Hughes."
    Seconded!!!!

  9. I grabbed a spare one today, just in case. Let me know if you need it.

  10. Nobody seems to be sure about Pants Lass. I heard Hughes meant it to be Batwoman, but several people I know thought it was Lois, and I would've sworn it was Helena.

I'm pretty sure Selina is contemplating whether or not she can slip Barbara's earrings out without Babs noticing.

I love that Power Girl's got the shoulders to carry off her rack, and that Wonder Woman is a good foot taller than most of the rest of the women. (Can anyone make out what those rings on... the brunette on the chair... are?)

  11. Magnificent picture.

Actual exchange, when shared with my online cronies:

JustThisRat sez, "It's not Zatanna without fishnets."

YourObedientSerpent smirks. "Then how do you know it's Zatanna?"

  12. Oh, goodness, that is truly GORGEOUS. I have two favorite things about it, though: Wonder Woman's expression, (so much confidence and strength, so very IN CHARGE), and the fact that Supergirl actually looks like a TEENAGER. I had occasional difficulty picking out who was whom, but that's mainly because there are a crappin' LOT of blondes in the DCU. You can figure them out by their outfits and expressions. For instance, Harley's smile suits her character VERY well. Also, an actually BLACK Vixen! YAAY-ness!!! Although, I will grant that I'm a bit biased...I buy Vogue for their pull-out photo shoots!

  13. Heh, that's a different hairstyle for Harley. It's nice.

  14. YAWN. I've seen tons of this type of stuff in manga. Dress the girls of the cast in evening gowns/wedding gowns and have it be a pull out poster. Why not have them dressed in military/baseball/football/basketball uniforms or something like that? This is very "been there, seen that."

  15. Vail, I appreciate the lesson on criticism. I'll remember from now on that it's not the artist's talent and ability to capture the characters that counts, but it all rests entirely on whether or not the gimmick of the piece has been used in Manga before.

I'll be sure to turn up my nose at in-costume posters, since they're always in costume and it's very "been there, done that."

  16. That was indeed a beautiful poster; I didn't pick it up because I had nowhere to hang it. I wish I'd picked one up for you, Ms. R.

  17. I've seen tons of this stuff in manga, too, but the difference here is that this piece is actually good.

  18. Vail: I would sincerely love to put your personal preferences under the microscope sometime. I wonder if everything you like would come off as startlingly original?

    I wonder indeed...

  19. What If...Frank Cho Had Drawn This Poster?

"Hi, Frank, we saw your prelim sketches. Just one request: could you draw some of the ladies a bit, y'know, different?"

    " . . . What?"

"Well, like, Oracle and Supergirl should be more petite. And while Power Girl and Wonder Woman are both muscular, they should still have unique builds. They shouldn't just be different heads on the same body!"

    ". . . You're still using English, right?"

  20. This was great- saw on nenena's site.

Unfamiliar with a couple of chars- but the ones I know were great in it. Wish they had a few more of the chars I like in it though. Only criticism I can make.

  22. Hi Ragnell,
Oh My Goodness! This is gorgeous! Is there any way to buy this at My Local?
    Please tell me I can.
    Ciao,
    Amy

  23. I admit it's pretty, but I would rather see the women in a strong way. Yes they are well drawn, and they are actually wearing more clothes then usual. The artist did a good job. But to me it's just like doing a swimsuit issue. I'm sure the art for that would be pretty too. And I guess I would rather see something different then I've seen in all the magical girl manga. Something that shows them as strong women who can kick but in costume and out.

  24. This is pretty cool. Adam Hughes is, as usual, the man.
