Black Canary

Pictures of Alaina Huffman in costume as Black Canary in an upcoming Smallville episode. (Via)

I really like how her costume came out. Not only does the actress look the part (I always figured on Black Canary as a petite woman with a tough expression), they kept the fishnets and the basic design, so she's recognizable as the comic book character. They went with short hair rather than a long wig that would get torn off during a fight, or long hair that an enemy could grab at in a street-level fight.

The makeup mask is interesting idea. If she has some quick way to smear it on like a spray or something like a solid rouge applicator (one of those big old-fashioned round bars that you could just smear circles on your cheeks with), it makes for a good quick change and won't fall off. But makeup like that doesn't seem to obscure the face very well. I suppose you could say it's a distraction. Between it and the fishnets and the dark alley no one is going to be able to properly describe her.

She must have to carry wipes to clean it off.

  1. Given how "non comic booky" Smallville likes it's heroes to appear (Green Arrow with shades and a hood, Cyborg without the external implants, everybdoy basically wearing clothes with the right colours), I'm shocked SHE'S not wearing shades too. It would fit her very well :) I like the short hair tho :]

  2. The only criticism I have is that it looks rather "Halloweeny", in an "easy to throw together at home" kind of way. Though that might not necessarily be that bad a thing, depending on the story.

  3. Ditch the bee socks, and I'm all with the look, Dinah.

  4. And a real domino mask would be much better than the Daryl Hanna in Blade Runner look.

  6. All I can say is it is about time Smallville paid attention to the female heros. That's what annoyed me the most about the early "JLA" episodes; that it was an all boys club when there were plenty of women to choose from (aside from Wonder Woman whom I'm aware couldn't be available). Out of all them, Black Canary would have been my first choice so I'm pretty pleased with this.

And the costume isn't too bad either. It's any interesting take on the original comic design.

  7. Actually, she travels with Sharona from Monk. She's got the wipes.

  8. The costume doesn't seem... right to me, but I've never been a Smallville fan, so I can't really comment on how in-worldy it seems.

I mean, its a great costume for fighting crime, but it doesn't immediately scream "Dinah" to me.

What I'm wondering is, though, Black Canary: Right Wing Talk-Show Host? Its better than Black Canary: Waitress, I suppose.

  9. Meet Dinah.

    She's 25. From Seattle.

She likes kickboxing, gardening, and guys with questionable facial hair.

    She's a Suicide Girl

  10. that costume is just like the one ed benes designed for Dinah during his run on BoP. The yellow stripes all the up to the jacket. Her top is unzipped and I think Benes would usually have it zipped up in favor to showing off her butt lol.

i like it, the spray on mask not so much. but it will look different post production effects.

  11. Does the regular identity have the same hair? It would be cool if regular Dinah had the black wig and Black Canary had the short hair. Better for secret identity, too.
