White Tiger Preview

Dammit! Why didn't anyone tell me this was up? Popcultureshock's newsfeed is on the fritz, I almost completely missed the two preview pages for White Tiger #1.

They've even got the blurb which I hadn't seen (as I don't really bother too much with Marvel Comics Solicits).
A HERO’S COMPULSION
Roaring out of the pages of Daredevil, the new White Tiger makes a ferocious debut, courtesy of the dynamic scripting of NY Times best-selling fantasy author Tamora Pierce (Trickster’s Queen, The Will of the Empress) and masterful penciling of rising star Phil Briones (La Geste des Chevaliers-Dragons, Les Seigneurs d’Agartha). Angela del Toro knows pain: Her uncle Hector Ayala, the former White Tiger, killed. Her FBI partner, murdered. Her career, ruined. Her mentor, Matt Murdock, jailed. And the hurt is just beginning….The Yakuza’s bloodthirsty Sano Orii returns, a genocidal shadow organization appears, and a new-but-old super-powered madman is looking to put the squeeze on White Tiger. Armed with mystical amulets—and finally in costume—White Tiger demands answers! But will she survive long enough to ask the right questions?
40 PGS./Parental Advisory …$2.99
Looks like she's playing off the Bendis Daredevil run. And 40 pages is a lot longer than I expected, which could be very good if the book is very good.

I'm just surprised I had to find this when tracking down information for another blogger. It should have come up in my regular rounds days ago. I mean, is nobody watching to see if this can redeem Marvel for Quesada fumbling the questions about female writers, giving Greg Land work, the Storm wedding, and the Invisible Woman giving her hubby a tumble before leaving him?

Okay, admittedly that looks like a pretty tall order. How about we just hope its good and sells enough to get her more comics work?

  1. I'm not big on her gaining a costume, but I'm pretty pscyhed about this series. I thought that she was a great character in DD, her relationship with Matt was a good one, and Sano's introduction lead to a couple of the best fight scenes in the Bendis/Maleev run.

I need to reread that. That whole deal was pretty much spectacular. I just wish that David Mack's last Echo story made it into the last hardcover. It had the best treatment of Wolverine in comics, bar none.

  2. Where was Mack's last Echo story? I was only reading Daredevil for a while.

  3. It's really, really weird that you posted this at this time, as I've been thinking a lot about Mack over the day.

(That sounded monumentally less creepy when I first thought of it. Ah well.)

Daredevil 51-55 or so, maybe 56. It followed up the "Hardcore" story line, which featured the return of Typhoid Mary and DD proclaiming himself to be the new Kingpin. It's collected here. Long story short, it's about Echo finding her place in the world after the events of Parts of a Hole.

A lot of people didn't like it, mainly because it kind of broke the rhythm of the main DD series, I think. It came directly after a status-quo changing story. Still, I heart Mack and I heart Echo and I heart this story.

I'm going to have to buy another copy. I let my mother borrow mine because she likes Mack. She said she liked it, but when it came time to give it back to me, it had already "disappeared." The same thing happened to my DEMO trade. Riiiiight, Mom.

  4. Oh, I think I have that one.

Yeah, it did seem out of continuity. I mentally file it away with Parts of a Hole.

  5. I think that Marvel commisioned it as a spinoff mini, but then got cold feet and tossed it into main series.

  6. What? A major comic book publisher chickening out? I'm shocked at the thought.

  7. other than the blanket dissing of female writers, the invisible woman one pisses me off the most.

  8. ...I'm so scared of the White Tiger series.

Why? Because I want it to be good. I want it to be good SO MUCH that I'm totally setting myself up for dissapointment.

You see, it's more than just seeing if they can make a good female heroine in the current Marvel age.. but well.. She's a Hispanic character who IS NOT Mexican Wrestler themed. (Why the hell did they kill off La Bandera anyway?)

Have they said what her family background is? I don't remember what Hector Ayala was, but is it too much for me to hope, upon hope that she'll be at least PART Puerto-Rican?

Seriously. It's NEW YORK EFFIN CITY and WHERE are the Puerto Rican superheroes? Eh? Eh? If you'll excuse me now, I'm going offscreen to rant about this for a few hours.

  9. I believe that it was shunted into the main series because Alex Maleev needed to take a break. I didn't read the Echo solo story myself- I consider "Parts of a Hole" the worst DD story ever. "Guardian Devil" is the second worst, for the Kevin Smith hatas out there. ;-)

Mack's Kabuki is pretty damn good, though.

  11. "Have they said what her family background is? I don't remember what Hector Ayala was, but is it too much for me to hope, upon hope that she'll be at least PART Puerto-Rican?"

Hector was Puerto Rican and so's Angela--her mom Awilda (who appeared in Deadly Hands of Kung Fu back in the 70s) married Marco del Toro, a NYPD cop. The family's settled in the Bronx, but Angela has a place in Manhattan on the Upper West Side.

My husband Tim Liebe is my co-writer, and we really want these to be good, too, but we'll have to see. We've been working on this for a long time, sorting out the bumps. This writing for comics is a tricky business, but at least we have a cool character to come in with. Angela's different from a lot of beginning superheroes in that she's already a seasoned cop, a seasoned FBI agent, so she's got her feet on the ground.

As for whether we succeed and it's any good, you folks are the judges. The series may still tank--you know how risky sales are these days--but if the people who really care about comics feel we did right by Angela, that's the important thing.

No, I'm not sucking up. Tim and I have both wanted to do this since grade school. I've wanted to write a female comics hero most of my life, and we want this one to work more than anything. We love nuestra Tigresa Blanca.

  13. I have to admit, the only reason for me to buy these were the David Mack covers. I am a sucker for all of this work. However, the solicit and the author's response in this blog makes me want to read it for the story. I'll give it a gander for more than a few issues, I suppose.

  14. In fairness to the Invisible Woman, the one last tumble might not have been as selfless as she made it out to be. Fascist jerk or not, the guy has stretchable body parts.
