Good luck for the hibernation--you'll be missed! Nice column, and one that shouldn't be controversial.
The article was well written, and really, who wouldn't benefit from becoming more understanding of another character's background or culture? Context is important, though. If a writer creates a stereotypical character, we should first wonder why he or she put that character in before bringing down the hammer on the work.
