I'm not a huge Lantern fan (but man, the way DC and Marvel are handling their cosmic stuff these days I'm certainly getting there) but doesn't the fact that there was a GL before Hal (Alan Scott?) and that most of Earth's GLs are still active as GLs kind of put a wrench in the whole "Why not use black heroes based on their own identity...It’s too bad that they have to integrate black heroes into existing legacies instead of creating new ones" spiel that seems to come up so often whenever the new guy in the legacy turns out to be black? Worse, John isn't exactly a new character.
Admittedly, I don't read it, but I don't recall this furor when the new atom turned out to be Asian.
