Has there been any information why it's been delayed so long? There's been time to have it completely redrawn from scratch since it was first scheduled. Twice.
Grant took the blame; apparently the script ran long both in terms of page count and time commitment, and he was working on Infinite Crisis stuff on top of it. It's the drawing of the book that's kept J.H. Williams from doing Detective Comics since the first issue of the current run.
My word - Williams can do a decent Kirby homage. Just when I think I can't get MORE impressed with his talent, he pulls that off.
And - damn - I've been waiting for this one for months. I really, really, really hope it doesn't get delayed. If those pages are insignificant enough for Newsarama to spoil, I can't wait to see the rest.
I like Williams a lot, but for me the Kirby homage is hugely disappointing. Williams slaps on the surface features and stylistic quirks like extraneous squiggles and "Kirby dots" but the layouts are atrocious and, like so many artists, he seems to think Kirby didn't know anatomy. (That turns out to be wrong: he played fast and loose with it for visual impact...but Kirby could draw excellent realistic portraiture when he wanted to.) Tom Scioli's stuff is closer to the mark than this.
Still looking forward to this book, though. And it comes out on my birthday!
I'm actually looking forward to this so much that I've declinded to do more than glance at the preview art. I guess I feel like I've waited so long, I might as well wait a few more weeks and see it in context. But the wait's getting harder now that I know it's just about here.

ReplyDeleteI hate to say it, but I'm glad he broke from 'Tec while he was drawing. I'd much rather see his art on this.
ReplyDeleteDarn, her name is Justina. There go my hopes her name would be Shinina Knight.
ReplyDeleteI like how the art here looks a lot like Bianchi's. Wonder if he'll do similar translations with the other characters.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, since I'm strictly waiting for the TPB the soonest I'll see this issue will be next year.
Is it a bad thing that when I saw her say "There is ONE!", my first thought was "Oh no, she's killed the Highlander!"?

If Williams isn't exclusive with DC yet, they better sign him up.
